Why plumbing in Rustenburg fails the way it does
A lot of household plumbing trouble in Rustenburg can be traced back to the water supply itself. Rustenburg Local Municipality supplies about 134.68 megalitres of water a day against a demand of 223.08, a shortfall it publishes in its own development plan. The water comes from Rand Water through the Barnardsvlei system, from Magalies Water at Vaalkop, and from the municipality's own works at Bospoort and in the Kloof.
A town that is short of water rations it by time. Water went off from 5pm to 5am every night during the 2019 restrictions, Geelhoutpark had it off from 19:00 to 06:00 in May 2021, and the municipality ran a water-shedding timetable in December 2024. The operator of the Boitekong sewage works reported in 2024/25 that "there is no water at night".
Each time a network is drained and filled again, air and loosened silt are pushed ahead of the returning water, and recovery can take up to 48 hours. On top of that, 778 km of the 1,477 km of mains are asbestos cement, which the national water department said in 2023 was "bursting frequently".
What that does inside your house
- Taps that spit air and run weak for a day or two after an outage.
- Brown or cloudy water. The municipality's own tap tests met the turbidity limit only 66.7% of the time in April 2025 and 62.5% in May.
- Aerators, shower heads and toilet inlet valves clogged with grit.
- Geyser valves that weep, and elements sitting in sediment.
- Drains that block more often, because sewers with little water running through them at night leave solids behind.
Most of it is fixed on your side of the meter: a strainer, a valve, a drained geyser, a cleared drain. Street-side bursts go to the municipality; everything from the meter to your taps is plumbing.
Know where your main stopcock is. After every outage, run an outside tap until the water is clear before you use anything indoors.

Promises you can check on the day
Each one answers a complaint people make again and again about hiring a plumber: surprise prices, wrong diagnoses and paperwork an insurer will not accept.
A price before the tools come out
The call-out fee and what it covers are told to you when the plumber phones back. After the fault is found, you get a written quote before work starts.
Tested, shown, then recommended
The failed part is shown to you, in your hand or in a photo. Replacing a whole geyser or a whole pipe run only comes up when a repair cannot work.
Leaks found before walls are opened
Where the opening goes and how big it will be is agreed with you first, along with who makes good afterwards.

Symptoms, and what they usually mean
Eight things people in Rustenburg notice first, and where each fix is explained.
| What you notice | What it usually means | What fixes it | More |
|---|---|---|---|
| Taps spit air and run weak after the water comes back | Air pushed ahead of the returning water after an outage or a shutoff | Usually settles once the network refills, which the municipality says can take up to 48 hours. If it does not, a strainer or valve on your side is next. | Water pressure repairs |
| Brown or cloudy water | Silt stirred up when the network drains and fills again | Run an outside cold tap until it clears. If only the hot water is brown, the geyser needs draining. | Geyser repair |
| One shower weak, the rest fine | An aerator, shower head or mixer cartridge clogged with grit | Cleaned or replaced. If only the hot side is weak, the geyser's pressure control valve is checked. | Water pressure repairs |
| Overflow pipe dripping on the roof | A geyser valve that no longer seals, or one releasing heat and pressure | The valve is tested and replaced as a part, not the geyser. | Geyser repair |
| Water bill jumped and nothing looks wet | A hidden leak on your side of the meter | A meter test with every tap closed, then the leak located before anything is opened. | Leak detection |
| A drain that blocks again within weeks | A partial blockage or a damaged section further down the line | Cleared properly, then looked at with a camera if it comes back. | Drain camera inspection |
| Sewer smell in the yard after rain | Stormwater getting into the sewer, or a broken gully | Find where the water gets in and seal or replace that section. | Drain unblocking |
| The pool needs topping up every few days | Evaporation, or a leak in the pool's pipework | A bucket test first, then the lines pressure tested one at a time. | Pool leak detection |

How much does a plumber cost in Rustenburg?
Rustenburg plumbing directories list hourly rates of roughly R360 to R900 and standard call-out fees of about R270 to R530 in 2026, with after-hours and weekend call-outs higher. Those are market figures, not a quote. When the plumber phones you back you are told the call-out fee, and after the fault is found you get a written price before any work starts. The plumbing prices page has the detail.
Why is there no phone number on this website?
Because one form gets your problem and your suburb to the plumber in one go. The plumber phones you back with your details already in front of them, so you are not explaining the same leak twice. If water is running, close your main stopcock while you wait and choose the closest problem in the form.
Which parts of Rustenburg do you cover?
The suburbs of the town itself, from the CBD, East End and Rustenburg North to Geelhoutpark, Protea Park, Safari Gardens, Cashan and Waterfall East, plus Tlhabane, Boitekong, Meriting, Seraleng, Phokeng, Kroondal and the villages towards Marikana. The full list is at the bottom of this page. If your area is not on it, put it in the form and you will get a straight answer.
What should I do after a water outage before I use my taps?
Before you touch an indoor tap, run the garden tap nearest the meter until the water comes out clean. That flushes the air and silt out before it reaches your geyser, toilet valves and aerators. If a tap stays weak afterwards, unscrew its aerator and rinse out the grit.
Where does Rustenburg's water come from?
From four sources: Rand Water through its Barnardsvlei system, Magalies Water from the Vaalkop works, and the municipality's own treatment works at Bospoort and in the Kloof. The Kloof works is fed by springs in the Magaliesberg and supplies about 2% of demand. Which one reaches your tap depends on your suburb's reservoir.
How do I check that a plumber is registered?
Plumbers in South Africa register with the Plumbing Industry Registration Board (PIRB). Ask to see the registration card before work starts, especially for geyser installs and work that needs a certificate. For anything that connects gas, ask for the installer's SAQCC Gas card as well.
Can you help with an insurance claim?
The paperwork is done so a claim can go in: photos of the damage and the failed part, an invoice that names the fault, each part and the time spent, and the old parts kept for the assessor. Whether your insurer sends its own plumber depends on your policy, so check with your broker first.
What happens to my details after I send the form?
They are used to phone you back and arrange the call-out, and for nothing else. They are not sold or added to a mailing list. The privacy page explains what is kept and how to have it deleted.
Ask for a call back
Leave your number and the best time to reach you. A plumber phones, asks what is happening and books the visit.
